Dorothy Danforth Compton Professorship
1985
The Dorothy Danforth Compton Professorship in the White Burkett Miller Center of Public Affairs is one of three Miller Center professorships created by the New York-based Compton Foundation, Inc. The professorship, assigned by the vice president and provost in 1985, is named for the wife of the foundation's chairman, Randolph P. Compton. Mr. Compton died in 1987. Mrs. Compton was dedicated to advancing civil rights and equal opportunity. She died in 1974.
The Board of Visitors elected Brian H. Balogh to the Dorothy Danforth Compton Professorship in the White Burkett Miller Center of Public Affairs in 2010. In 2011-2012, Mr. Balogh served as chair of the Miller Center's National Fellowship Program, now in its twelfth year; continued work on his next book, to be published by the University of Pennsylvania Press; planned a major conference entitled "Recasting Presidential History," to be held at the Miller Center in October 2012; and served as one of three co-hosts of "BackStory, with the American History Guys," a nationally broadcast public radio program, all while maintaining his regular teaching, advising, and service responsibilities in the Corcoran Department of History.
