James R. Schlesinger Distinguished Professorship

History of Past Recipients and Projects

In May 2009, Admiral Joseph W. Prueher was appointed as the first James R. Schlesinger Distinguished Professor for the 2009-10 academic year; his appointment was renewed for the 2010-11 academic year. Admiral Prueher is a consulting professor at Stanford and Harvard Universities, and senior advisor on U.S.-China security matters for the Preventative Defense Project. He served as Ambassador to the People's Republic of China for Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush from 1999 to 2001, after completing a 35-year career in the U.S. Navy. His last post was commander-in-chief of the U.S. Pacific Command (CINCPAC), the world's largest military command center.

The University of Virginia established the James R. Schlesinger Distinguished Professorship at the Miller Center of Public Affairs in 2007. James R. Schlesinger has had a distinguished career in public service, serving under President Nixon as Secretary of Defense and under President Carter as the nation's first Secretary of Energy. He also taught economics at the University of Virginia from 1955-1963. The James R. Schlesinger Professorship encourages scholars to use real world experiences relating to issues of national security and foreign policy as inspiration for research and teaching.In May 2009, Admiral Joseph W.
